Established in 1951, J. Murphy & Sons has grown into a leading global, multi-disciplined engineering and construction company with turnover of £780 million. The company provides a wide range of construction services to infrastructure sectors including rail, water, power and natural resources.


Murphy directly employs more than 4,000 staff and operates in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia and the Middle East. Despite its size, awareness of their expertise across civil engineering, tunnelling, rail, energy, water and wastewater, pipelines, building, highways, public realm and security and piling was low.


As part of a project to raise the profile of the business, Murphy employed RI to undertake research. The research was designed to help Murphy gain an insight into customer views, opinions and perceptions of the business.


RI created a series of telephone surveys that were tailored to different audiences. This included current clients, lapsed clients, students and staff. This enabled Murphy to gain data on the level of understanding that different stakeholders had on the business, enabling then to tailor marketing communication activities to best address weaknesses and help to grow the business.
